ADDISON'S DISEASE

DEFINITION:-

Lack of glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoids hormones production by adrenal cortex is called Addison's disease.




CAUSES:-

Unknown but some other causes are:

  • T.B.
  • Syphilis
  • ACTH inhibitors drugs
  • Adrenalectomy
  • Adrenal hemorrhage

SIGN/SYMPTOMS:-

  • Excessive fatigue
  • Muscles weakness
  • Weight loss
  • Menstural changes
  • Impotence
  • Change in emotion
  • Dehyderation
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Confusion
  • Coma
  • Excessive loss of sodium and water in the urine.

DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION:-

  • Physical examination.
  • History collection.
  • Blood test (↑es plasma cortisol).
  • Serum Na,K,Cl,Ca.
  • Blood cell count.

MEDICAL MANAGEMENT:-

  • Corticosteroid drugs, e.g., Prednisolone, hydrocortisone.
  • I.V therapy.

DIETARY MANAGEMENT:-

  • High calorie
  • High protein
  • Increase table salt.

NURSING DIAGNOSIS:-

  1. Risk for injury related to ineffective stress reponse.
  2. Fluid volume deficit related to excessive loss of sodium and water.
